IRVING, Texas?Iowa State freshman Leonard Johnson was named the Big 12 Conference Special Teams Player of the Week Monday after setting an NCAA record with 319 kickoff yards Saturday at Oklahoma State.
Johnson, who recorded a 35.4 yard average for his kickoff returns, had longs of 72 and 73 yards. His 72-yarder set up a Cyclone touchdown and was the longest ISU kickoff return since 1999. The Clearwather, Fla. native's 319 yards topped the previous FBS record of 282 yards set by Justin Miller of Clemson vs. Florida State Sept. 25, 2004.
Graham Harrell (Texas Tech), Daniel Charbonnet (Texas Tech) and Johnson were named the Big 12 Conference Football Players of the Week as selected by a media panel. Harrell (offense) earned his fifth career award and second consecutive honor. Charbonnet was honored for the second time this season while Johnson was recognized for the first time in his career.
