AMES, Iowa--Iowa State (6-2) travels to Iowa (8-2) on Friday in the annual Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series matchup. The Iowa game will be the final instate matchup between the three other Division I schools for ISU. The Cyclones defeated Northern Iowa (71-66 ot) and lost to Drake (66-63).

-Iowa State ranked 15th nationally in field goal percentage defense (36.1 percent) in this week's NCAA statistics...the Cyclones have held all eight of their opponents this season to 40 percent or below shooting from the field.
-ISU also ranked 11th in the nation in least amount of turnovers (11.3 tpg)...the Cyclones have had five games with 11 turnovers or less this season.
-The Cyclones have also been an outstanding 3-point shooting team this season...averaging 9.0 3-pointers made per game, ISU has made 10 or more treys in five of eight games this year...ISU did not make 10 3-pointers in a game once last season.

Last Time Out
-Iowa State let a victory slip out of its hands on Tuesday, falling to Drake 66-63.
-The Cyclones held a 10-point lead with under seven minutes left in the game, but Drake outscored ISU, 16-3 to end the game and emerge as the victor.
-In both of ISU's losses this season (at Hawaii) the Cyclones have held double-digit leads with less then 10 minutes left in the game.
-ISU built its lead thanks to the hot shooting of sophomore Lucca Staiger...Staiger made his first six treys en route to a career-high eight 3-pointers and a career-high 24 points.
-Staiger's eight treys ties for second on ISU's single-game record book...Staiger, who is shooting 46.3 percent from 3-point range this year (19-41 3FG) to rank sixth in the Big 12, has made 12 3-pointers for a 63.1 percentage (12-19 3FG) in his last two games...he is also averaging 19.0 ppg in that span.
-Bryan Petersen also added three treys for 11 points, as the Cyclones made 13 3-pointers in the game...it was ISU's fifth double-digit 3-point shooting effort of the season...the Cyclones failed to make 10 in a game all of last season.
-With Petersen's three 3-pointers, the senior is now tied for 20th all-time in ISU's career 3-pointers made list with 60.
-Diante Garrett dished out 10 assists and scored seven points vs. Drake...it was Garrett's second double-digit assist game of the season...Garrett, who ranks first in the league in assists (6.1 apg), has handed out five or more assists in five games this year.
-The difference of the game was free-throws and second chance points...Drake outscored ISU at the line by 14 (18-4) and the Bulldogs had 16 second chance points to ISU's two.
-The Cyclones played good enough defense, holding Drake to 39.2 percent shooting...ISU, which ranks second in the league in field goal percentage defense (36.1 percent), has held all eight opponents this year to 40 percent shooting or less.
-ISU was outshot from the floor (39.2%-39.0%) for just the second time this season...both times ISU was outshot resulted in losses.

-Iowa (8-2) won its last most recent game with a 65-46 victory over Northern Iowa in Iowa City...the Hawks outscored UNI, 42-24 in the second half.
-Iowa was led by Jake Kelly and Matt Gatens, who scored 19 points and 14 points, respectively...Gatens was 4-of-5 from 3-point range.
-Iowa's leading scorer, Anthony Tucker (13.1 ppg), did not play in the UNI game after being suspended indefinitely...his status for the Iowa State game is still uncertain.

-I guess the ISU basketball team did not get the memo that the 3-point line was moved back a foot.

Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series
-This is the fifth season of the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series...the school that excels in competition- athletic and academic- will be crowned champion of the head-to-head series between the Cyclones and the Hawkeyes.
-Iowa has an early 11-4 lead, gaining points in football (3), soccer (2), women's cross country (2), wrestling (2), women's basketball (2)...ISU received points in volleyball (2) and men's cross country (2)...four more points will be given out on Friday with the men's basketball game and the women's swimming meet...both events are in Iowa City.
-Both schools have won a pair of season titles in the first four years of the series.
60 Is The Magic Number
-Greg McDermott's Cyclone teams have always had the reputation for solid defense...ISU has held all but three teams this year to less than 60 points and have not allowed a team to shoot above 40 percent from the field once this season.
-Now in his third year at the helm, McDermott is a perfect 21-0 when an opponent fails to score 60 points.
Stingy Defense
-Through eight games, ISU has not allowed an opponent to shoot above 40 percent from the field this season, keeping its opponents at a 36.1 percent clip to rank second in the league and 15th nationally.

Brackins Taking The Next Step
-Craig Brackins was one of the highest-rated recruits to ever sign with the Cyclones and the sophomore is living up to the hype.
-Brackins is sixth in the Big 12 in scoring (17.0), tallying 10 or more points in all eight games, including three 20+ games and one 30-point outing.
-Brackins, who has started all 40 games of his career, has recorded 11-straight double-digit scoring games and has eight career 20-point games.
-Brackins tallied his second 30-point game of his career with 32 points and a career-high 16 boards at Northern Iowa...he is the 21st Cyclone in school history to have multiple 30-point games.
-He earned co-Big 12 Player of the Week after averaging 22.5 points and 13.0 rebounds in wins over Northern Iowa and Oregon State.
-He was the first Cyclone to register a 30-point/15-board performance since Loren Meyer tallied 31 points and 15 boards vs. Nebraska on March 5, 1995.
-Brackins is averaging 11.3 rpg in his last three games.
Garrett Is ISU's Playmaker
-Sophomore Diante Garrett's improvement has been a key to ISU's success this season...Garrett is second on the team in scoring (10.9 ppg) and ranks first in the Big 12 and 37th nationally in assists (6.1 apg).
-Garrett, who dished out a career-high 11 assists vs. Loyola-Marymount, has the fourth-best assist/turnover ratio in the Big 12 (2.5 a/t).
-Garrett has dished out five or more assists in five games...he has two double-digit assist games (11 vs. LMU; 10 vs. Drake).
-The Milwaukee, Wis., native poured in a career-high 26 points at Hawaii, making 10-of-10 from the free-throw line...it was just the 16th time in school history where a Cyclone was perfect from the charity stripe with 10 or more attempts.
-Garrett leads the team in free-throw percentage (75.0 percent)...he has made 24-of-his-last-28 (85.7 percent) free-throw attempts.
-Garrett also ranks second on the team in rebounding (5.1 rpg).
Staiger On The Mark
-The long-anticipated debut of Lucca Staiger has finally arrived...Staiger lost a year of eligibility last season after the NCAA Certification process deemed him ineligible because he played on a German club team that had two players receive extra compensation according to the NCAA...Staiger did not receive any money or extra benefits, but the NCAA declared his team as “professional” because the two players received extra compensation.
-This season started slow for Staiger after undergoing knee surgery in October...he is slowly getting back into shape and the Cyclones are reaping the benefits.
-Staiger is averaging 7.9 ppg and leads the team in 3-pointers made (19) and 3-point accuracy (46.3 pct.)...Staiger ranks sixth in the Big 12 in 3-point percentage.
-The Blaustein, Germany native had a breakout game vs. Drake, scoring a career-high 24 points behind a career-high eight 3-pointers (8-11 FG)...he made his first six 3-point attempts in the game...his eight treys ties for second in school history for most 3-pointers made in a game.
-He has three games this season with four or more treys.
-In his last two games, Staiger is averaging 19.0 points and hitting 63.2 percent of his 3-pointers, netting 12-of-19 shots from downtown.
