AMES, Iowa- Iowa State sophomore Diante Garrett's hard work in the weight room has not gone unnoticed. The Cyclone starting point guard was recently honored as a National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-American for 2008.
Each year, the ISU strength & conditioning staff nominates one female and male athlete ? excluding football ? who demonstrated significant progress in maximizing their potential in strength training. For Andy Moser, ISU's director of strength & conditioning, he couldn't think of a person more deserving than Garrett.
“His dedication, commitment and work ethic in the weight room is one of the best I have seen from the athletes I have worked with,” Moser said.
Garrett, a native of Milwaukee, Wis., came to ISU in the summer of 2007 as a top-150 player nationally. Garrett used his height and quickness to earn first-team all-state honors while dominating his high school opponents.
At 6-4, Garrett had the size, but he was just 161 pounds when he came to Ames. A little over a year later, Garrett is playing at 185 pounds while averaging 11.4 points and ranking in the top-50 nationally in assists (5.7 apg), a significant rise in production from his freshman campaign.
“The improvement he has shown in the weight room has drastically improved his game,” Moser added. “He still has a ways to go, but his improvement has been above and beyond anybody else.”
Moser noted that Garrett tested out at 135 pounds for his maximum bench press in his initial workouts as a Cyclone. He now can max 215 pounds in the bench. His squat lift has also improved from 200 pounds to 305 pounds from a year ago.
“As a freshman, Diante knew that he had a lot of work to do to change his body in order to improve his game,” Moser said. “His dedication in the weight room over the summer and preseason has shown that he is committed to the team and will do whatever it takes to get better.”
Garrett's name will be placed among a board which honors the other ISU NSCA All-Americans outside the ISU weight room in the Lied Recreation Center.
