AMES, Iowa - Seven Iowa State football players were given all-Big 12 Conference honorable mention honors Tuesday on a vote of the league's coaches.
Punter Mike Brandtner averaged 41.6 yards per boot in 2008, equaling the 10th best single-season mark in school history. The junior from Bettendorf owns a career average of 40.6 yards per punt that ranks fifth in school history. Offensive lineman Reggie Stephens has started 26 straight games and played mostly at right guard this season.
Five Iowa State defenders were honorable mention all-Big 12. Freshman Leonard Johnson earned honors as a kick returner and as a defensive back. Johnson averaged 26.4 yards per kickoff return this season, the second-best mark in school history. He also made 42 tackles as a cornerback with two interceptions. Safety James Smith of Council Bluffs earned honorable mention honors after making a team-high 85 tackles as a junior.
Defensive ends Kurtis Taylor, a senior from Fort Dodge and junior Rashawn Parker were named honorable mention selections. Taylor finished his career with 85 tackles, 11 1/2 sacks and 19 tackles for loss. Parker has 73 career tackles, six sacks and 11 tackles for loss through three ISU seasons.
Former Southeast Polk product Jesse Smith of Altoona finished second on the team in tackles with 84 stops this season. The junior owns 170 career tackles and rounded out the Iowa State players on the all-Big 12 coaches team.
