AMES, Iowa ? Four Iowa State football players were named honorable mention selections on the Associated Press all-Big 12 football team. The team was chosen by journalists who cover Big 12 football.
Cyclone punter Mike Brandtner averaged 41.6 yards per boot in 2008, equaling the 10th-best single-season mark in school history. The junior from Bettendorf owns a career average of 40.6 yards per punt that ranks fifth in school history.
Two Iowa State defenders were named honorable mention. Safety James Smith of Council Bluffs made a team-high 85 tackles as a junior. Defensive end Kurtis Taylor, a senior from Fort Dodge, finished his career with 85 tackles, 11 1/2 sacks and 19 tackles for loss.
Iowa State placekicker Grant Mahoney of Marion earned honorable mention recognition. The freshman kicked 17 field goals in 2008, tying him for third with Adam Benike (2002) on the ISU all-time single-season chart. His 84 points rank second all-time. Mahoney had a pair of 48-yard field goals this season.
