NORMAN, Okla.? Oklahoma made 25-of-29 shots from the free-throw line en route to a 76-64 win over Iowa State Wednesday night in Norman, Okla. ISU falls to 13-12 overall and 3-7 in Big 12 play. The Sooners shot 18 more free-throws than the Cyclones to improve to 16-8 overall and 4-5 in league play.
“I think it is obvious that the tougher team won tonight,” ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. “We tried to do some things on Blake Griffin to take away his power inside, but to Oklahoma's credit, (Tony) Crocker, (Austin) Johnson and (Cade) Davis made us pay for doubling down on Griffin.”
ISU held an early 9-8 advantage after Wesley Johnson buried a deep trey, but OU quickly went on a 7-0 run to go ahead 15-9 with 11:40 left in the first half. Tony Crocker hit a trey and Longar Longar scored on a post move inside to help the Sooners take the lead.
The Sooners made it a 14-0 run when Austin Johnson hit a trey at the 9:40 mark, giving OU a 22-9 advantage. The Cyclones finally ended their field goal drought when Rahshon Clark put-back a Craig Brackins miss to make it a 24-13 game with 8:32 left before intermission.
The Cyclones crept back into the game by going on an 11-0 run to close the gap to 24-22 with 5:50 left before half. Bryan Petersen, Jiri Hubalek and Wesley Johnson made 3-pointers on three-straight possessions to aid the ISU comeback.
The Sooners went into break with a 38-32 lead, thanks to 10-of-11 shooting from the free-throw line compared to just two foul shots for the Cyclones. ISU made six first half treys to help the visitors hang around. Hubalek hit two treys and had 12 points at the break to lead ISU.
Both teams traded baskets in the early stages of the second half until the Sooners scored six-straight points to mount a 54-42 lead after Crocker dunked home a Sooner miss with 11:50 left in the game. However, Petersen answered for ISU by canning back-to-back treys to stop the Sooner momentum.
After Brackins hit a free-throw line jumper to make it a 56-50 game with 9:22 remaining, OU's Cade Davis hit a trey followed by a steal and a Taylor Griffin lay-in to push the Sooners back up 61-50 with 8:05 remaining in the game. Davis then hit another big 3-pointer to pad OU's lead to 15 points (67-52) with 5:37 left in the contest.
ISU got as close as 10 points after Diante Garrett made a conventional 3-point play, but Davis drilled another 3-pointer to allow the Sooners to hold a comfortable 70-57 lead with 2:34 left.
Hubalek led ISU in scoring for the fifth-straight game with 23 points. Hubalek has scored 20 points or more in back-to-back games and is averaging 20.7 points in the last four contests for the Cyclones. Garrett came off the bench to record his second consecutive double-digit scoring game with 10 points. Clark added four points and a team-high nine boards in the loss. Clark has 23 rebounds in his last two games.
ISU returns home this Saturday (Feb. 16) to battle Nebraska in Hilton Coliseum, as ISU honors 100 years of men's hoops in its Centennial Celebration weekend. Tip-off is at 3 p.m.
