AMES, Iowa - Matches against NCAA Tournament qualifiers Minnesota and Northern Iowa highlight the 2008 Iowa State spring volleyball schedule, released by head coach Christy Johnson on Monday.
The Cyclones return four starters and their libero from the most successful team in school history, which advanced to the NCAA Regional Semifinal in 2007. Setter Kaylee Manns joins middle blocker Jen Malcom as returning starters while Mary Bisenius and Victoria Henson return on the outside in addition to libero Ashley Mass.
Manns, a rising junior and two-year starter, already ranks fourth in school history with 2,835 assists. The Topeka, Kan., native was fifth in the Big 12 averaging 12.41 assists per game last year.
Malcom returns after posting one of the top hitting seasons in ISU history with a .293 percentage, which ranks fourth. Malcom was third on the team with 308 kills and led the squad with 1.38 blocks per game.
Bisenius and Henson posted solid 2007 campaigns, averaging 2.34 and 2.88 kills per game, respectively. Bisenius was the MVP at the Hampton Inn State of Iowa Challenge while Henson pounded out a team-high 18 kills while hitting .319 in ISU's upset win over 16th-ranked San Diego in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Mass was one of the Big 12's top liberos during her freshman campaign, earning a spot on the Big 12's inaugural All-Freshman Team. The rookie earned two Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors and was second in conference matches with 4.91 digs per game. She was just the third player in school history to record over 500 digs in a season with 532 and she set the school-record with 10 or more digs in 26 straight matches to end the season.
Iowa State will open the spring slate with a match against Cyclone alumni and current coaches on Tues., March 11 at 6 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
On April 5, ISU will head to Cedar Falls for a tournament that includes the host Panthers, Drake and another team still to be determined.
The following weekend, ISU will host Creighton, Minnesota and Northern Iowa at the Forker Gym befor closing out the spring season on April 20 against Minnesota and Marquette in Minneapolis, Minn.
