LUBBOCK, Texas ? Texas Tech used 15-4 run late in the second half to upend Iowa State, 76-64, Saturday afternoon at United Spirit Arena.
The Cyclones (14-13, 4-8) were unable to contain the Texas Tech duo of Martin Zeno and Alan Voskuil, who finished with 23 and 21 points, respectively. The Cyclones out shot Texas Tech, 44.8 percent to 42.9 percent, but the Red Raiders were 20-for-27 from the free throw line compared to just 4-for-9 for Iowa State.
Iowa State was paced by Jiri Hubalek and Sean Haluska, who finished with 17 and 15 points, respectively. Haluska's total was a career-high while Hubalek also tied a career-high with 15 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Bryan Petersen (14 points) and Craig Brackins (12 points) also reached double-figures for ISU.
Hubalek was everywhere in the first half as ISU took a 33-31 lead into the break. The senior finished the half with a double-double, posting 13 points and 11 boards, including his second 3-pointer with just five seconds remaining to give Iowa State a 33-28 edge. Tech's Alan Voskuil raced down the court and hit a 25-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer to close the gap to two.
The Cyclones' biggest lead in the first half was eight points (16-8) following a conventional 3-point play by Bryan Petersen, who finished with 11 points. The Cyclones and Red Raiders both finished the half 5-for-9 from behind the arc.
The Cyclones were able to extend their lead to four (39-35) following Wesley Johnson's jumper, which were his first points of the game. The Red Raiders went on a 10-2 run to go up 45-41 before ISU got a three from Haluska and a jump hook by Brackins to regain the lead. Texas Tech again responded with a run of its own, going on a seven point run to regain a 52-46 advantage. The teams traded baskets with Iowa State closing the gap to one (61-60) on a Petersen 3-pointer and Hubalek dunk.
In the end it was too much Martin Zeno as the Texas Tech senior had a layup and four free throws down the stretch en route to his game-high 23 points.
Iowa State will host No. 4 Kansas on Wednesday at Hilton Coliseum. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. with the game being broadcast on ESPN.
