AMES, Iowa? No. 18 Texas A&M outscored Iowa State 20-7 in the opening part of the second half to break open a close game and come away with a 69-51 victory Tuesday night in Hilton Coliseum. The loss, which ends ISU's nine-game home winning streak, drops the Cyclones to 13-10 overall and 3-5 in Big 12 play.
"I thought the first half we executed our defensive game plan well enough to really keep us in the game," ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. "Texas A&M plays well together and unselfish. We just had too many guys who finished 1-for-7 and 1-for-8 that had good looks at the basket."
ISU began the game cold from the floor, making just one of its first eight shots from the field. TAMU took a 15-8 lead after Donald Sloan and Derrick Roland hit back-to-back treys. Jiri Hubalek kept the Cyclones close early on, scoring nine of ISU's first 12 points, including back-to-back baskets to cut the Aggie deficit to 15-12 with just under nine minutes remaining in the opening period.
After the Aggies made two-straight buckets to go up 19-12, ISU went on a 10-0 run to take a 22-19 lead with 4:21 left in the first half. Wesley Johnson and Bryan Petersen drilled back-to-back treys to jumpstart the Cyclone comeback.
TAMU, however, closed the half with an 11-2 run to hold a 30-24 lead at the break. There were no offensive rebounds recorded by either team in the first period, as both teams grabbed 18 defensive boards apiece.
The Aggies came out ready after intermission, going on a 9-2 run capped off by a Josh Carter 3-pointer to push the visitors out in front 39-26 with 17:12 left in the game. Carter then hit another 3-pointer, his fourth of the game, to give the Aggies a 46-31 advantage with 13:51 remaining in the contest. TAMU made nine-of-its-first-11 shots and held its largest lead at 21 points (57-36) with 10 minutes left in the game.
The closest ISU got the rest of the way was 15 points when Wesley Johnson scored on a conventional 3-point play with just under seven minutes remaining.
Hubalek paced the Cyclones with 18 points, leading the team in scoring for the third consecutive game. Wesley Johnson chipped in with 13 points in his first game back after sitting out the Nebraska game with an ankle injury.
Rahshon Clark tallied three points and made one 3-pointer in the game. Clark's only trey gave him 100 for his career, making him the only player in Big 12 history to record 1,000 points, 100 steals, 100 blocks and 100 3-pointers in a career.
ISU plays host to No. 12 Texas on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m.
