AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State women's tennis team will take on the Westerwinds of Western Illinois on Friday at 3:30 p.m. The Cyclones will wear pink shirts and fans are encouraged to war pink as part of the “Think Pink” initiative to raise breast cancer awareness.
The Cyclones opened their spring dual season with a 7-0 sweep of Wisconsin-Green Bay last Saturday in Rochester, Minn.
Alyssa Palen and Caitlin Loprinzi had successful return visits to their hometown of Rochester. Palen defeated UW-Green Bay's Kelly Stadum, 6-0, 6-0. Loprinzi, a senior, won in straight sets over Lauryn Grimando, 6-1, 6-3. The two teamed up to defeat Laura Barkindale and Grimando, 8-1.
Western Illinois enters the match with a record of 0-1 after losing their dual with the Northern Iowa Panthers, 5-2. Westerwinds newcomers Amanda Griffin and Ashley Clark picked up the victories over the Panthers.
This is the first time the Cyclones and Westerwinds have met in a dual match since 1996, when the Cyclones won, 7-0. The all-time series between the two squads is tied at 4-4. Senior Chrissy Derouin's sister, Jenny was an all-conference performer for Western Illinois in 1994.
