AMES, Iowa - Iowa State's tennis team was unable to come away with wins in hard fought matches on Saturday against the Texas Tech Lady Raiders, falling 5-2. The loss?drops the Cyclones to 3-5 in duals this season (0-3 in the Big 12).
In doubles, the pair of Chrissy Derouin and Erin Karonis was unable to capitalize on a 7-5 lead, allowing Kerryn Potgieter and Brenna Jackson to force the tiebreaker. The Lady Raiders came away with the win, winning the?tiebreaker 7-3. At No. 2 doubles, Janet Durham and Samantha van der Drift defeated Caitlin Loprinzi and Kara Hickey, 8-5. The Texas Tech duo of Kelsy Garland and Simone Templeton was victorious over Liza Wischer and Alyssa Palen, 8-2.
"I thought we needed to play a little more agressive in our doubles matches," said ISU head coach Michele Conlon. "As a team we were disappointed. Hopefully we can channel that disappointment into practice Monday and get ready for our matches in Florida."
In singles play, Iowa State was able to come away with two victories. Karonis was victorious in a tussle at No. 1 singles. Texas Tech's van der Drift forced the tiebreaker in the first set, but Karonis was able to come away with the tiebreaker by a score of 8-6. Karonis took the second set 6-0.
"Erin really had a nice win today," said Conlon. "van der Drift has had a good career and it wasn't an easy win for Erin, but it was a nice job by her."
Fellow freshman Liza Wischer was also able to get in a win. The Grand Forks, N.D., native won her match against Maria Jose Andres, 6-4, 6-2.
"Liza really played a great match today," Conlon said. "She really played to win the match at the end."
Iowa State returns?to action Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Fort Myers, Fla., against Florida Gulf Coast. Followed by a match Wednesday at 3 p.m.? in Fort Myers against Darmouth.
