AMES, Iowa- Iowa State head men's basketball coach Greg McDermott and his wife Theresa will once again join forces with the other Division I men's basketball coaches in Iowa and their spouses to host the second annual “Hoops For Hope,” a fundraising event benefiting the American Cancer Society. The event is set for Saturday May 10, 2008 at the Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Altoona, Iowa starting at 5:30 p.m.
Last year's event was an incredible success. More than 300 people attended the gala, generating more than $140,000 to help benefit cancer research. Organizers are aiming for a goal of $200,000 this year.
The Iowa State Athletics Department has an excellent track record of supporting cancer causes. ISU was one of the nation's top participants in the “Think Pink” weekend on Feb. 8-9, an initiative set by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association to help bring awareness to breast cancer. Cyclone men's and women's basketball teams wore pink shoelaces and the coaching staffs donned pink accessories on the sideline. Cyclone fans also got into the act, as Cyclone Alley members wore pink shirts to help fight the cause.
McDermott knows too well how cancer can affect someone's life. His wife, Theresa, was diagnosed with breast cancer in November of 2005. Thanks to early detection, Theresa has made a wonderful recovery and is now a cancer survivor.
“Attention needs to be brought to how many people are affected by this disease, and the positive outcomes you can have if it's detected early” McDermott said. “With the research Theresa and I have done since she was first diagnosed, it is amazing to me how far treatment has come in the last five years. It is our hope we can make a difference by raising some funds so the treatment and detection plans will be even better five years from now.”
ESPN basketball analyst Doug Gottlieb and the 2004 National Coach of the Year Phil Martelli of St. Josephs will be in attendance at the fundraiser. Gottlieb will emcee the event, and Martelli is the keynote speaker.
An individual ticket for the event is $150 and a table of 10 can be purchased for $1500. A social hour, dinner, auction and entertainment will be provided. For more information about the event, call 1-800-688-0147 or click here to log onto the “Hoops For Hope” website.
