CEDAR FALLS, Iowa ? Courtney Wray homered and Charissa Carlin gave up just two hits in five innings of relief work to lead Iowa State to a 6-3 win over Northern Iowa in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader at Robinson-Dresser Sports Complex. The win was the fourth straight for the Cyclones.
The Cyclones (23-11) fell behind 3-0 after UNI (10-13) scored two in the first and one in the second inning.
Jen Larsen opened the scoring with a double off ISU pitcher Amie Ford that scored Megan Machovec. Larsen then came in to score on a single from Rachel Gerking. In the second, Kelly Papesh added to the lead with a sacrifice fly that scored Ashley Lepley.
The Cyclones got two back in the top of the third as Courtney Wray hit her third homer of the season, a two-run shot that scored Kristy Olsen. ISU tied it in the fourth when Carleigh Berry scored on an error by Larsen.
Iowa State's bats stayed hot in the fifth as the Cyclones took their first lead of the game. Sydni Jones and Carrie Monroe added runs for the Cyclones by walking and being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Sara Stinson then singled to make it 6-3 ISU heading to the bottom of the frame.
Wray and Jacquelyn Beatty finished with two hits each to lead ISU at the plate.
Carlin (8-5) picked up the win in relief of starter Amie Ford, who lasted just two innings and allowed three runs on four hits. Carlin gave up just two hits in five innings.
Larsen (3-7) got the loss for the Panthers. Larsen gave up six runs on seven hits before being chased in the fifth.
