COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 32 Aggies of Texas A&M defeated the Iowa State women's tennis team on Sunday, 7-0, in a match delayed by rain. The loss moves Iowa State to 4-8 on the season (0-4, Big 12). The Aggies move to 10-5 (4-0, Big 12).?
Texas A&M began the match by winning the doubles point. After an hour and?13 minute rain delay, senior Chrissy Derouin and freshman Erin Karonis defeated Anna Blagodarova and Tiffany Clifford at the No. 1 doubles?spot, 8-6. Karonis and Derouin hold a record of 5-7 on the season. At No. 3 doubles position, Texas A&M's Stephanie Davidson and Morgan Frank improved to 10-2 this season, defeating Liza Wischer and Alyssa Palen, 8-2. Caitlin Loprinzi and Kara Hickey were also defeated in doubles play.
"I am really proud of Chrissy and Erin," said ISU head coach Michele Conlon. "There were several rain delays throughout their doubles match. It takes a lot of focus to stay in a match like that."
In singles, Texas A&M's Elze Potgieter defeated Karonis, 6-0, 6-1. Potgieter is the 76th-ranked singles player nationally. Her record now stands at 8-5 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, Christi Liles defeated Hickey, 6-3, 6-1. Iowa State senior Loprinzi was unable to get a win against Anna Blagodorvoa. Derouin played a close first set vs. the Aggies' Tiffany Clifford, but lost the match, 6-4, 6-0. Palen and Reka Kelemen were also defeated in singles play.
Iowa State continues its long road stretch with a trip to the state of Oklahoma. The Cyclones will take on the Oklahoma Sooners at 5 p.m., Friday, in Norman. That match will be followed Sunday with a dual?against the Oklahoma State Cowgirls at 10 a.m.?
