COLUMBIA, Mo.? Leo Lyons hit a shot with :14 seconds left in double overtime to help Missouri survive with an 81-75 win over Iowa State Wednesday night in Columbia. ISU, which falls to 14-16 overall and 4-11 in Big 12 play, held a 3-point lead with under a minute left in regulation and made a last-second shot by Diante Garrett in the first overtime to keep its chances alive. Garrett finished the game with a career-high 20 points.
“I told our guys to not hang their heads on this one,” ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. “We competed and fought hard. I told our guys that we have made great improvement even though it has not been showing up in the win column.”
Iowa State jumped out to an early 11-7 lead when the Cyclones got a pair of transition hoops from Rahshon Clark and Alex Thompson while breaking the Missouri press. The Tigers evened the game moments later with a pair of baskets from Leo Lyons to make it a 11-11 game with 11:40 left in the first half.
The lead exchanged hands for the next several minutes until Garrett came alive for the Cyclones. The freshman scored seven of ISU's nine points during a two-minute stretch to help ISU forge a 22-19 lead with just under eight minutes left in the opening period. ISU held its largest lead of the first half at 30-23 with 3:45 left after a Bryan Petersen trey and a Rahshon Clark free-throw.
ISU ended the half with a 32-27 advantage thanks to an 11-of-13 effort at the free-throw line. The Cyclones only turned the ball over three times vs. the Missouri press and outrebounded the Tigers, 23-16 in the first half.
A 9-2 run by the Cyclones to open the second half gave ISU a 41-29 lead with 16:51 left in the game. Craig Brackins scored on a couple of lay-ins and Hubalek hit a trey to jumpstart ISU out of the gates after the break. The Tigers quickly answered, however, with an 11-2 run to cut the lead to 43-40, as ISU broke down a couple of times on MU's pressure defense leading to easy Tiger baskets.
The Tigers took their first lead since the early part of the first half when DeMarre Carroll made six-straight points to help MU go ahead 47-46 with 9:36 left in the game. The Cyclones retook the lead with a Brackins 3-pointer (53-51), but J.T. Tiller scored the next four points to push MU back out in front 55-53 with 4:30 remaining in the game.
Garrett then scored five-straight points to help ISU take a 58-55 lead, but MU tallied the next four points to hold on to a 59-58 lead with just under two minutes left. Garrett and Hubalek then made four-straight free-throws to push ISU up 62-59 with under a minute left, but Lyons scored inside and was fouled by Hubalek on MU's next the possession. The 3-point play tied the game at 62-62 with 0:29 seconds left. ISU inbounded the ball to Garrett, but his pass was tipped and stolen by the Tigers to give the home team the final shot. Lyons attempted a fadeaway from the free-throw line, but it rimmed out to send the game into overtime.
ISU struggled in the early part of the first overtime, as MU scored six-straight points behind a pair of baskets from Lyons to give the Tigers a 68-62 lead with 2:31 remaining in the extra period. Bryan Petersen finally got ISU on the board in overtime with a 3-pointer to cut the Tiger lead to 68-65 with 1:22 left. A pair of Wesley Johnson free-throws cut the lead to 69-67 with under a minute left. The Cyclone defense then came up with a key stop to allow ISU one more chance with 0:11 seconds left. Garrett took the ball and dribbled the full length of the court and attempted a twisting shot. Garrett missed the shot, but got his own rebound and scored with 0:01 left to send the game into the second overtime.
“I thought the first shot was in, but it rattled out,” Garrett said. “It came back out and happened to fall right back in my hands and I just put it in.”
The Tigers got baskets from Butterfield, Horton and Carroll to forge a 77-75 lead with 1:27 left in the second overtime. A charging call on Petersen gave the ball back to the Tigers with under a minute left, allowing Lyons to drain a clutch shot with 0:14 seconds left to seal the victory for MU.
Garrett led ISU with a career-high 20 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. ISU made 30-of-35 shots at the line and outrebounded MU, 45-36. It was just the fourth Big 12 opponent ISU won the battle of the boards against this season. Hubalek scored 10 of his 15 points in the first half and Brackins added 13 points in the loss. Clark tallied eight boards, he now ranks 14th in school history with 658 caroms.
ISU plays its final home game on Saturday vs. Kansas State. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
