AMES, Iowa ? Amanda Zust tossed four innings of one-hit shutout ball in relief and Iowa scored two runs in the seventh to defeat Iowa State, 3-1, Tuesday afternoon in softball action at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
Zust (10-2) relieved Brittany Weil, who gave up a run in the second inning, and kept the Cyclones (23-15) off balance, striking out seven of the 12 batters she faced.
The Cyclones took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a double by Sydni Jones to left center that scored Amanda Bradberry from first. Bradberry had singled through the right side to lead off the inning.
The teams didn't score again until the fifth inning as the pitching staffs held their opponents hitless in the third and fourth.
Erin Riemersma broke up the pitcher's duel with a first-pitch homer to right field to tie the game at 1-1. The next batter, Summer Downs, singled to right field but Zabriskie worked out of the jam, getting Quinn Morelock to pop up a sacrifice bunt attempt that was snagged by Jones and relayed to Bradberry at first for the double play.
The Cyclones had a chance in the bottom of the fifth as Jones singled up the middle to lead off the inning. Ariel Coburn then pinch ran for Jones but was caught stealing for the second out after Zust fanned Carrie Monroe.
With one-out in the seventh, Katie Brown delivered the game-winning homer to right center. The Hawkeyes (22-11) would add another as Riemersma walked and came in to score on Downs' double to left center.
Zust closed out the game with a three-up, three-down seventh inning as the Hawkeyes won their second straight.
Jones finished 2-for-2 to lead the Cyclones while Kristy Olsen and Bradberry finished with a hit each.
Zabriskie (11-6) gave up three runs on five hits in the losing effort.
Despite the loss, Iowa State maintains an 18-9 advantage over Iowa in the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series, with all athletic events in the competition now complete. The Iowa State softball squad will be back in action Saturday as it plays host to sixth-ranked Texas A&M. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
