AMES, Iowa- Jiri Hubalek received the call he was waiting for this morning. Hubalek, a third-team all-Big 12 pick who led Iowa State in scoring (12.4 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg) in 2007-08, is one of 65 players invited to participate in the 2008 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, April 9-12 in Portsmouth, Va.
The tournament is a showcase for the best seniors in college basketball to display their skills in front of NBA scouts. Hubalek will play alongside the best senior collegiate players in the nation and will have a chance to reunite with his former Big 12 rivals. Big 12 stars Darnell Jackson (Kansas), Aaron Bruce (Baylor), Joseph Jones (Texas A&M), Aleks Maric (Nebraska), Longar Longar (Oklahoma), Richard Roby (Colorado) and Martin Zeno (Texas Tech) are all scheduled to appear at the tournament.
“I am very excited to be invited,” Hubalek said. “This is an opportunity for me to pursue my dream of playing professional basketball. This is one of the best tournaments to be invited to and I will be playing against the best players in the nation. I am excited to be able to show my skills.”
Hubalek, a native of Prague, Czech Republic, joins a long list of former Cyclones to play in the tournament. Martin Rancik, Paul Shirley, Jackson Vroman and Jared Homan are just a few of the recent Cyclones to play in the postseason classic. Vroman's superb play at the 2004 Portsmouth Invitational, where he earned all-tournament honors, helped him get drafted early in the second round of the 2004 NBA Draft.
“I remember Jared (Homan) telling me how much fun it was to play in it,” Hubalek added. “I have been lifting weights, shooting and trying to stay in shape since the basketball season ended.”
Hubalek ended his three-year Cyclone career with 936 points and 522 rebounds. The 6-11 center graduated in December with a degree in liberal studies.
