AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State volleyball team's incoming class has been ranked No. 25 in the country by PrepVolleyball.com. It marks the first time in school history that the Cyclones have been ranked in the top-30 by the service.
“One of our goals for this season was to bring in a top-25 recruiting class, so we are very excited about this recognition,” ISU head coach Christy Johnson said. “Every one of these players brings athleticism and experience to our program, and they each have a particular talent or skill that we felt we needed.”
The incoming class includes Kelsey Petersen (6-0, OH, Kearney, Neb.), the 60th-ranked player in the country. PrepVolleyball.com calls Petersen a “high flyer with a super fast arm.” She averaged 4.09 kills and 1.18 blocks per game as a senior.
Rachel Hockaday (6-1, OH, Decatur, Ill.) was a late addition to the class after receiving her release from Ohio University following a coaching change. Hockaday, a top-150 selection, earned first-team all-state honors as a senior and finished her career as Maroa-Forsyth High School's all-time leader with 1,158 kills.
Top-250 selection Debbie Stadick (6-3, MB, Watertown, Wis.) is a physical middle blocker who led Watertown High School to the Wisconsin Division I state championship. Stadick earned Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and Wisconsin State Journal Player of the Year accolades.
Carly Jenson (5-11, OH, Omaha, Neb.) and Caitlin Mahoney (5-10, DS, Omaha, Neb.) round out the recruiting class. Jenson, who attended Millard North, the same high school as head coach Christy Johnson, was a first-team all-state selection after posting 401 kills as a senior.
Mahoney, a graduate of Marian High School, recorded 390 kills and 330 digs as a senior. She finished her career holding the Nebraska Class A records for service aces in a match, single season and career.
The Cyclones were fourth among Big 12 teams, trailing just Texas (2), Nebraska (6) and Oklahoma (23).
