Cyclone Notebook
? Iowa State went 2-1 on opening weekend at the Panther Invitational in Milwaukee, Wis. The Cyclones defeated Illinois State to open the weekend before falling to UW-Milwaukee in the nightcap. ISU rebounded to sweep Ole Miss to capture the tournament championship.
? Jen Malcom was named tournament MVP after averaging 3.00 kills and 1.33 blocks per set. The senior hit at a .464 clip in the three matches.
? Joining Malcom on the all-tournament team were Victoria Henson (3.58 kills, 1.50 digs) and Kaylee Manns (11.00 assists, 3.75 digs).
? Manns posted a double-double in each match last weekend, bringing her career total to 37.
? Sophomore libero Ashley Mass kept her consecutive double-digit digs streak alive with 10 in a sweep of Ole Miss. Mass has now reached double-figures in 29 straight matches, which dates back to her first career start at libero against LSU in 2007.
? ISU started two freshman last weekend with Rachel Hockaday earning the nod on the right side and Debbie Stadick starting at middle blocker. Carly Jenson and Caitlin Mahoney each saw action last weekend as well.
? After playing in 40 career matches without posting 10+ digs, senior Mary Bisenius accomplished the feat twice last weekend. She had a career-best 13 against Illinois State, giving her the first double-double of her career.
? Iowa State is 8-2 against the Missouri Valley Conference under fourth-year head coach Christy Johnson.
? A win over Creighton would be the 600th win in the history of the Iowa State volleyball program.
? Tuesday's match will be the 100th of Johnson's career at Iowa State. Coincidentally, Johnson's head coaching career began at the Bluejay Invitational in 2005 where ISU defeated Northern Colorado and Creighton.
? The match against Creighton will serve as a homecoming for three Omaha natives on the ISU roster. Head coach Christy Johnson graduated from Millard North as did freshman Carly Jenson. Caitlin Mahoney also grew up in Omaha, graduating from Omaha Marian last year.
? Despite losing two of its best blockers from a year ago (Erin Boeve and Lauren Cummings), Iowa State has still shown the ability to put up a big block. The Cyclones are averaging 3.12 blocks through the first weekend, including an impressive 12.5 vs. Ole Miss.
Scouting Creighton
? Creighton went 1-2 on opening weekend but played in one of the better tournaments in the country. The Bluejays swept Texas A&M and fell to No. 16 Minnesota (0-3) and No. 21 LSU (2-3).
? The Bluejays hit .205 as a team led by middle blocker Lauren Bloemke, who hit .406 with 15 kills in three matches. Bloemke's fellow middle blocker Jessica Houts led the team with 3.55 kills per set while hitting .253. Creighton averaged 1.86 blocks and 14.55 digs per set. The Bluejays were hurt by serving errors, posting 30 compared to just nine aces on the weekend.
? In its win over Texas A&M, CU hit .336 as a team and got 13 kills from Carolyn Decker and 11 from Amanda Cvejdlik. The Bluejays had four players with double-digit digs and held A&M to a .160 hitting percentage.
? Creighton is coached by Kirsten Bernthal Booth, who is in her sixth season at the school. The winningest coach in school history, Bernthal Booth led the Bluejays to a 21-10 mark last year.
? Iowa State leads the all-time series 4-2 and is 2-0 all-time in Omaha.
Last Time They Met
? Creighton took a 3-1 win when the teams met last season at Hilton Coliseum.
? In the match, Creighton held Iowa State to just a .098 hitting percentage by out blocking the Cyclones 15-13.
? Bloemke had 18 kills while Houts and Allie Oelke finished with 14 and 13, respectively. Bianca Rivera had a match-high 18 digs for CU.
? ISU got 14 kills from Erin Boeve and 11 from Lauren Cummings. Returnee Mary Bisenius added eight kills and Jen Malcom had two solo blocks and seven block assists for the Cyclones, who fell to 0-2 on the season.
The Search For 600
? Iowa State is just one win shy of the 600th win in school history. The Cyclones all-time record is 599-638-10.
Johnson Racing To 60 Wins
? Fourth-year head coach Christy Johnson is on pace to become the fastest Cyclone coach to 60 career wins. Johnson currently has 58 career wins in 99 career matches. It took Vicki Mealer (1985-92) 110 matches to reach 60 wins.
Team Captains
? Senior Jen Malcom and junior Kaylee Manns will serve as team captains for the 2008 season.
