AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State's total of 11 true freshmen, who played their first collegiate game against South Dakota State last weekend, is the second-highest figure nationally among FBS schools. Only SMU, which played 13 true freshmen Saturday, saw more first-year collegians hit the field.
“We tell our recruits and all of our players that the best players on the team will play,” Iowa State head coach Gene Chizik said. “It doesn't matter if you are a senior or a freshman, the best individual will play. The numbers bare that out.”
In total, 67 Iowa State players saw action in ISU's 44-17 win over South Dakota State. It was the most Cyclones to appear in a game since 78 players participated in a 58-6 win over Tennessee Tech in Ames on Sept. 7, 2002.
