Cyclone Notebook
? Following a 3-0 setback at third-ranked Texas Wednesday, Iowa State hosts No. 2 Nebraska Saturday evening at Hilton Coliseum.
? In the loss to Texas, ISU had set points in the second and third sets before falling 27-25 in each frame.
? The Cyclones used a balanced attack, with five players posting seven or more kills but none reaching double-digits. ISU was unable to stop a tough Texas attack, which hit .358.
? Jen Malcom has hit over .400 in 10 of 14 matches this season, including a .533 percentage (9k-1e-15a) against Texas. She has hit .442 and averaged 1.47 blocks per set over the last five contests.
? Malcom is the career leader at ISU for hitting percentage with a .331 average.
? Ashley Mass extended her double-digit consecutive match streak to 40 with 14 digs against the Longhorns. The streak is the longest active streak in the Big 12 and dates back to her first career start as a freshman against LSU in 2007.
? Mass has averaged 5.24 digs over the last five contests.
? Kaylee Manns is leading the Big 12 with 11.61 assists per set. Her career average of 12.47 is tops in school history.
? Manns needs just 179 digs to become just the second player in school history to record 1,000 assists and 1,000 digs. (Lisa Burke, 1988-91)
? Victoria Henson has shown great improvement in the first 14 matches this season. Her 3.98 and .262 hitting percentage come after posting 2.45 kills and hitting .063 in the first 14 matches of 2008.
? Henson is second in the league with 195 kills, trailing only Rita Liliom of Kansas State (204).
? Freshman Kelsey Petersen made her first career start against Texas on Wednesday. Petersen started on the right side, getting seven kills, while fellow freshmen Rachel Hockaday shifted from the right side to the left. Senior Mary Bisenius played primarily in the back row for the Cyclones. The move gives ISU a bigger block on the right side.
? In the last five matches, Hockaday has averaged 2.35 kills and 2.59 digs while hitting .243.
Scouting Nebraska
? Despite losing four All-Americans and two National Players of the Year, Nebraska has reloaded and enters this weekend 11-0 overall and 3-0 in Big 12 play. The Huskers are ranked second in the country.
? The Huskers defeated Kansas 3-1 Wednesday night in Lincoln. Against the Jayhawks, Jordan Larson and Tara Mueller had 12 kills each. Larson recorded a double-double with 11 digs while Kayla Banwarth led the way with 13 digs in the match.
? On the season, Kori Cooper leads all regular attackers with a .391 hitting percentage while Larson averages a team-best 3.78 kills. Mueller is second with 3.21 kills.
? Defensively, Banwarth averages 3.88 digs while three Huskers average more than a block per set, led by Amanda Gates' 1.22 stuffs.
? The Huskers are the third-best hitting team in the league with a .273 average while holding opponents to a Big 12 low .131 percentage. NU ranks second in kills (14.11) and service aces (1.57).
? John Cook is in his seventh season at Nebraska. He owns a 198-13 record at the school and led the Huskers to national championships in 2000 and 2006.
? The Huskers lead the all-time series 72-0.
Last Year Against The Huskers
? The Huskers swept both matches against the Cyclones.
? In the match in Ames, ISU set the state of Iowa volleyball attendance record with 6,705 fans at Hilton Coliseum.
? Despite the large fan turnout, Nebraska was just too balanced for the Cyclones, hitting .389 and getting 16 kills from Sarah Pavan. Victoria Henson led ISU with 11 kills.
Match To Be Televised Tape Delay
? The showdown between the Cyclones and Huskers will be shown on a tape delay by Mediacom Connections. BJ Schaben will do the play-by-play with former Cyclone setter Sara Vander Sanden (Stribe) being the color analyst. The replay schedule is as follows:
Monday, Sept. 29 - 7 p.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 30 - 10:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Oct. 1 - 9 p.m.
On Deck For ISU
? The Cyclones will travel to Missouri on Wednesday, followed by a home contest against Oklahoma on Saturday.
First To 20 Wins.....Most Of The Time
? With the switch to 25 points to win a set this year, emphasis for the Cyclones has come on reaching 20 points first. Below breaks down ISU's record when reaching 20 points first and when the opponent gets to 20 first:
When ISU reaches 20 first: 28-5
When OPP reaches 20 first: 4-10
Freshmen 2.00 Kills/2.00 Digs Club
? Since 1982 just four Iowa State freshmen have averaged 2.00 kills and 2.00 digs per set. 2008 freshman Rachel Hockaday is on pace to do just that, having averaged 2.47 kills and 2.35 digs in the first 14 matches this season. Here is a look at the others to accomplish the feat:
2008 - Rachel Hockaday - 2.47 kills, 2.35 digs
2002 - Amanda Craig - 2.15 kills, 2.99 digs
2001 - Brittany Dalager - 2.88 kills, 4.07 digs
1999 - Sarah Rollman - 2.14 kills, 2.26 digs
1988 - Tracy Graham - 2.37 kills, 2.42 digs
Efficient as.......Malcom
? To say Jen Malcom has been an efficient hitter during her two-year career with the Cyclones is an understatement. She is the school's leading career hitter with a .331 career average, with second place being over 40 percentage points below her. She has hit over .400 in 20 of 47 career matches, including 10 of 14 this year.
