AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State men's cross country team has jumped up to second place in the Division I Men's Midwest Region Cross Country rankings after a impressive finish at the Roy Griak Invitational in Falcon Heights, Minn. The team was ranked third in the preseason polls, but after finishing second this weekend, the Cyclones move past Minnesota for the second spot.
“I mean rankings are rankings,” head coach Corey Ihmels said. “We are just going to keep taking care of what we are doing and keep training hard the next few weeks and let the rankings take care of themselves.”
ISU has had a chance to see Minnesota on the course, but top-ranked Oklahoma State will be a huge challenge in the Big 12 when the Cowboys come to Ames for the conference championships.
“I think Minnesota will be pretty solid,” Ihmels said. “We haven't seen Oklahoma State. With their recruits and what they are coming off of last year, they are obviously going to be the team to beat in the region.”
The ISU cross country teams will have a three week break before traveling to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Pre-Nationals race Saturday, Oct. 18. The team will have plenty of time for preparation before playing host to the Big 12 Championships in Ames, Iowa on Nov. 1.
