AMES, Iowa ? As the Iowa State volleyball team continues its climb into the nation's elite teams, so does its fan base. The Cyclones rose to 15th in the nation in attendance in 2008. ISU was third among Big 12 teams in the final rankings, trailing only Nebraska (second) and Texas (11th).
The Cyclones averaged 1,671 fans in 14 home matches to top 20,000 fans in a season for the first time in school history. ISU finished the season with 23,298 spectators attending its matches.
“Going into the season one of our goals was to get into the top-15 in the country for attendance and we did it thanks to our great fans,” ISU head coach Christy Johnson said. “I think we are really building something special and our fan base is playing such a big role in that. Hilton Coliseum can be a really great place to play, and tough for the opponent, when we get a good crowd. Fortunately, that happened quite a bit this season and we really benefited from it.”
The Cyclones, who finished the season 11-3 in the friendly confines of Hilton Coliseum, have seen a 161 percent increase in attendance since Johnson's first year in 2005. That year saw ISU average 623 fans per match.
Iowa State posted three of the top-10 crowds in school history, including matches against Nebraska (4,294) and Texas (4,026) that saw crowds top 4,000. Five of the top six crowds in school history have come since Johnson's arrival in Ames.
The Cyclones will return 11 players from this season's Elite Eight team, while adding one of the top recruiting classes in school history.
