LAWRENCE, Kan. ? 14th-ranked Iowa State out blocked Kansas, 13-2, and used 13 kills from Victoria Henson to sweep the Jayhawks, 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-17), Saturday night at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center.
The win, Iowa State's fifth in a row, leaves the Cyclones at 14-3 overall and 6-2 in Big 12 play. The 6-2 start in Big 12 play is the best in school history. Kansas falls to 9-7 overall and 2-5 in league play.
Henson wrapped up a solid week with another good all-around performance. The junior hit .278 in posting a match-high 13 kills to go along with seven digs and three block assists. Henson moved into seventh all-time at ISU, passing Dana Burson (1986-89), with 1,049 kills.
Kaylee Manns finished with 34 assists, becoming the fifth player in Big 12 history to go over 5,000 career assists. Manns, who now has 5,013 assists, also had nine digs, a solo block and four block assists.
Defensively, ISU was dominant at the net, out blocking its opponent for the third-straight contest. Freshman Jamie Straube had a match high six block assists and sophomore Debbie Stadick added five.
The Cyclones held a 54-50 edge in digs, led by Ashley Mass' 14. Caitlin Mahoney was in double-figures for the third-straight match, finishing with 10.
In the opening stanza, ISU used an early 7-0 run to separate itself from the Jayhawks en route to a 25-18 win. KU scored the first two points, but ISU answered with seven in a row for breathing room and never looked back. The Cyclones hit .306 and had six team blocks in the frame to control the net.
The second set was tied at 9-9 before the Cyclones went on a 6-1 run keyed by a pair of kills from Henson and a block by Stadick and Manns to lead 15-10. The Jayhawks never got closer than four as ISU held a 5-0 edge in blocks in the second to win 25-16.
The third set was much like the second as KU held serve early in the frame, tying it up at 9-9 before the Cyclones finished on a 16-8 run to pick up the sweep.
Kansas got nine kills from Allison Mayfield and ISU did a good job containing the Jayhawks' Karina Garlington, who finished with just seven kills on a .125 hitting percentage. Last season in Lawrence, Garlington finished with 29 kills and KU beat the Cyclones 3-2.
Melissa Manda had a match-best 16 digs for the Jayhawks.
Iowa State returns to action Wednesday when it plays host to Texas A&M at 6:30 p.m.
