PEORIA, Ill. -- Iowa State junior Daniel Murray's fifth-place finish led the Cyclone men's cross country team to a runner-up finish at the sixth annual Bradley Classic. The Iowa State women's team finished seventh.
"I felt like everyone competed really hard," head coach Corey Ihmels said. "Daniel Murray did an exceptional job. As a group we ended up second. It's a little disappointing; we always want to come to this and win (the Bradley Classic) like we have in the years past but I thought we competed hard on both sides."
Junior Clayton Carper and redshirt freshman Charlie Paul finished in the top 10. Junior Alex Whitesell and redshirt freshman Garrett Ekof rounded out the top five finishers for the Cyclones. The team accumulated 64 points, finishing runner-up behind the University of Windsor.
"Before the race we talked about staying together (as a team) for the first four or five (thousand meters) and then try and go out a little harder," junior Daniel Murray said. "This is the third time I've run here. It gets a little repetitious but it's a pretty flat course so it wasn't too bad."
Sophomore Dani Stack's 22nd-place finish led the Iowa State women to a seventh-place finish. Junior Brittany Rover finished 25th (22:33), sophomore Kellein Oettle placed 31st (22:44) and freshman Taylor Petersen finished 37th (22:55).
"(The women) competed pretty hard as well," Ihmels said. "I thought Brittany Rover did a great job, she competed really hard and made some great moves late in the race. I thought Dani (Stack) did well and kind of came back to form after (Roy Griak Invitational) so we had some positive things and obviously this group is going to keep moving forward and get ready for conference in two weeks."
Iowa State cross country heads to Terre Hautte, Ind. for the 2009 Pre-Nationals Invitational Saturday, Oct. 17. The men's race begins at 11:40 a.m. and the women's race begins at 12:20 p.m. Results will be posted on cyclones.com.
