MEMPHIS, Tenn.- The Iowa State men's golf team finished fourth in a 16-team field at the Memphis Intercollegiate on Tuesday. The Cyclones carded a three-round 899, improving each round of the tournament. South Alabama won the event by shooting an 882, five strokes ahead of the second place Arkansas-Little Rock.
ISU senior Ben Herrera continued his last-round heroics by firing a 69 this afternoon to earn a fourth-place finish individually, his fourth top-11 showing in four fall events this year. Herrera has been money down the stretch, posting sub-70 scores in the final round of all four fall events this year. He is averaging an incredible 68.3 strokes per round in the final 18 holes of every tournament this season.
Another highlight for the Cyclones was a hole-in-one by junior Jacob Aaholm. Aaholm used an eight iron to ace the 167-yard, par-3 third hole during the second round of play. He is the first Cyclone to score a one in an official collegiate competition since Paul Huddle's hole-in-one in 2004 at the Arkansas State Invitational.
Tom Lathrop (224) also cracked the top 20 for ISU, tying for 17th. The tournament champion was South Alabama's Marc-Ettienne Bussieres, who finished play with a 207.
The next tournament for the Cyclones is Oct. 26 at the Aldila Intercollegiate in Chattanooga,Tenn.
