OMAHA, Neb. ? No. 5 Iowa State met its match in the Omaha Regional, falling to No. 7 Nebraska, 3-0 (11-25, 19-25, 22-25), Friday night at the Qwest Center in front of 8,935 spectators to end its season.
The Cyclones (27-5), who hit a season-low .096, got 13 kills from Victoria Henson. Henson hit .321 for ISU, but the Huskers were able to keep all other regular attackers below a .100 hitting percentage.
Kaylee Manns closed out her stellar career at Iowa State by posting her 68th career double-double with 23 assists and 13 digs. Manns finishes her career as Iowa State's all-time leader with 5,625 assists, while also ranking sixth with 1,379 digs.
Ashley Mass led the Cyclones with 14 digs, but ISU was out dug by the Huskers 51-48.
Nebraska (26-6) was clicking on all cylinders, hitting .324 in the match and getting 10 kills from right side hitter Lindsey Licht. The trio of Brooke Delano, Kori Cooper and Hannah Werth each contributed nine kills for the Huskers, who advance to face No. 2 Texas Saturday at 8 p.m.
The Cyclones struggled in the opening set, committing seven hitting errors to hit just .056 in a 25-11 loss. The Huskers were nearly unstoppable in the opening frame, blistering the ball at a .441 clip.
The big run came with Nebraska leading 7-3 following a Kelsey Petersen kill. Gina Mancuso stepped up to the service line and the Huskers rattled off seven in a row to break open the set and roll to the win.
In the second set, ISU led 17-16 following an ace by Mass, but the Huskers would tally nine of the next 11 points to win the set 25-19 and head into the break up 2-0. ISU had 10 hitting errors in the set to run its total to 17 for the match. Nebraska went into the locker room hitting .357 as a team, while the Cyclones were at just a .026 clip.
The Cyclones started slow again in the third, falling behind 4-0 and 6-1 before trimming the lead to 6-3 on kills by Henson and Petersen. Nebraska then pushed its lead to six at 18-12, but the Cyclones made one last push to keep its season alive, cutting the lead to two (22-20) on kills by Rachel Hockaday and Jamie Straube.
The Huskers got a kill from Werth to make it a three-point edge, but Henson blasted her 13th kill of the match to cut it back to two at 23-21 Nebraska. After a Cyclone service error gave the Huskers match point, Banwarth made a bad set before senior Kori Cooper finished it on an assist from Sydney Anderson.
The Cyclones wrap up their season with an NCAA era record for wins (27). ISU also finished second in the Big 12, the highest finish in program history.
