AMES, Iowa ? Ali Farokhmanesh buried a huge 3-pointer with 0:34 seconds left to lift UNI to a 63-60 victory over Iowa State Wednesday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Panthers outscored the Cyclones, 18-8 in the final 10 minutes of the game to help secure the road win.
The Cyclones, who fall to 6-2 with the loss, made just 39.1 percent of their shots in the second half.
"We knew this was going to be a tough week," ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. "I am disappointed that we lost at home. Our fans were fantastic and they tried to jumpstart us several times, but we couldn't sustain it."
ISU fell behind early 8-5 after back-to-back baskets from UNI's Jordan Eglseder. The Cyclones bounced back with a 12-2 run to go ahead 17-10 with 12:13 left in the first half. Marquis Gilstrap and Craig Brackins each had five points in the run.
The Cyclone lead was as big as nine points with 7:19 left, but UNI's Adam Koch took over with three-straight baskets on a variety of moves to cut the ISU lead to 25-22.
Diante Garrett scored on a lay-in the final seconds of the first period to give the Cyclones a 36-31 advantage at the break. Garrett had eight first-half points and Brackins had 11 to pace the Cyclones. Koch led all scorers with 12 points at the break.
UNI scored on its first four possessions of the second half to take a 40-38 lead with 17:26 left in the game. Koch made a long 3-pointer to give the Panthers their first lead since the 16:56 mark of the first half.
The Panthers were up 43-40 until back-to-back treys from Garrett and Scott Christopherson pushed the Cyclones back out in front 46-43 with 13:57 remaining.
After the Cyclones went up by seven points (52-45), the Panthers went on a 13-5 run to retake the lead at 58-57 with 4:07 left in the game. Eglseder accounted for 10 points in the run. Brackins then gave the lead back to the Cyclones with a pair of free-throws to make it 59-58.
Both teams misfired on their next four possessions until Farokhmanesh hit the crucial 3-pointer with 0:34 seconds left to give the Panthers a 61-59 lead. Garrett was fouled with 0:15 seconds left, making one of two shots. Ahelegbe then made two shots at the line to put UNI back up by three points (63-60).
The Cyclones had two chances to tie the game, one by Staiger and one by Brackins, but both 3-pointers were off the mark.
Brackins, who was held without a field goal in the second half, scored 13 points. Garrett led ISU with 15 points.
Koch and Eglseder both had 20 points to lead UNI.
