Kaylee Manns is one of three Iowa State volleyball players participating in the U.S. Volleyball National Team tryouts in Colorado Springs, Colo. this weekend. Manns is taking time out of her busy schedule to share her experiences from each day, as well as those of teammates Ashley Mass and Victoria Henson.
Manns, a rising senior, participated in the same tryouts following her freshman season and was named to the National A2 team.
Hey Cyclone Fans,
Today was a busy day for three ISU volleyball players, as we completed our first day at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Our flight left Des Moines this morning at 9:33 a.m. and we got into Denver two hours later, but with the time change it was only 10:30 a.m. Once we landed in Denver we had a two hour layover until we could board our short 20-minute flight to Colorado Springs. As soon as we arrived at our final destination, we were greeted by several other players and the Olympic Training Center bus that would take us to our home for the weekend.
It has been really great meeting all the girls and everyone we have played against/with over the period of our collegiate careers. As soon as we walked into the gated training center, we checked in to get our room assignments, grabbed some food from the cafeteria and relaxed for a little bit before our 5 p.m. session started. During the beginning of the session we did serving, hitting and passing drills. It really got fun towards the end when we actually started playing some 6 vs. 6 games! There are so many great athletes here and this first day was eye opening. I teamed up with Victoria for a while during the drills and it was a relief to set the ball to someone I knew. Mass did outstanding in the passing drills and we all got to play with some other Big 12 athletes from Texas A&M and Kansas State. Once the first session was over we all went to dinner then hung around for our meeting at 9 p.m. There were three sessions today, (3-5,5-7 and 7-9) so the meeting was after all sessions had been complete and all participants were to attend. They talked about rules and proper etiquette while in the training center and we got our court assignments for the next day. Mass and Victoria start playing at 8 a.m. and I start at noon, which means I get to sleep in. :)
There will be three sessions in the morning and three sessions at night tomorrow; each of us will only play in one during the morning and one during the evening. The fact that we are competing for a chance to represent the United States has already made this experience so competitive and I'm sure tomorrow will even ask more out of each of us.
Go Clones!
