AMES, Iowa- Former Cyclone great Dedric Willoughby is back in Ames today for the first time in over 10 years. Willoughby, who was a two-time first-team all-conference pick and the 1996 Big Eight Tournament MVP, got a chance to sit down with the Cyclones at shootaround this morning.
“I told them to be proud of wearing the Cardinal and Gold,” Willoughby said. “We had a team (1995-96) that was picked for last, but we stuck together and kept working as a team and we ended up finishing second in the league and winning the Big Eight Tournament.”
“I remember the first time I came to Hilton Coliseum and I realized how special this place is,” Willoughby added. “This is the best time in their lives and you should never take it for granted. The fans here are the greatest and I can hardly wait to see it again tonight. I told them to go out and get a win.”
Willoughby was named to ISU's All-Century team last season in celebration of 100 years of mens' hoops. He was unable to attend the event a year ago, but he will be presented with his All-Century team plaque at halftime of tonight's Iowa State-Kansas State game.
“When you look at our record book, his name is all over the place,” ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. “He's probably the best shooter to have ever played here and I am glad he got the opportunity to talk with our team.”
