DES MOINES, Iowa ? Iowa State's 2008 NCAA Elite Eight volleyball team has rightfully earned its full share of athletics honors. Its success has now transcended collegiate competition. The ISU squad was honored at the State Capitol Monday by both houses of the Iowa General Assembly.
Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson, assistant coaches Joe Lynch and Dawn Sullivan and members of the squad arrived during the noon hour at the historic gold-leafed capitol and congregated in the rotunda.

They were then escorted first into the House of Representatives, where a special resolution honoring the squad was unanimously voted into the record. The team's achievements were chronicled and read aloud before the group received a standing ovation from the body of lawmakers, which is 100 strong.
“This was such a great opportunity for our team,” Johnson said. “It was special to receive such an ovation from the representatives and the senators. We are grateful that they took the time to recognize us. It was a great experience for all our kids and in some ways an even greater experience for our student-athletes who are from out-of-state to gain and appreciation for the state of Iowa.”
After being honored in the House, the ISU team moved to the opposite side of the capitol and climbed the Cyclone-like spiral staircase into the balcony of the Senate chamber. From there, the Iowa State group received another standing ovation from the body's 50 members. The team then took in some of the historic exhibits on display before heading back to Ames.
