AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State's football team is holding its own version of Friday Night Lights this spring. The Cyclones went through a night workout Friday. The workout is the first of three Friday night spring practices scheduled in the Bergstrom Athletic Training Facility.
This spring, the ISU football team is practicing on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons. There is a method behind the various starting times.
“Tuesday and Thursday mornings were set up by the previous staff,” Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads said. “Our guys already had their academic schedules set up to be clear during that time.”
Rhoads says that academics also played a role in the balance of the practice schedule.
“We were going to practice Saturday afternoons and coming back on Sunday didn't seem right for our guys, Rhoads said. “Giving them Sundays off means they have a full day to study. So we decided to instead practice on Friday evenings.”
Iowa State's fourth spring practice will be Saturday afternoon.
