Cyclones Drop 6-1 Decision to Aggies

AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State tennis team fell to Texas A&M Saturday evening at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center, 6-1. The Cyclones are now 1-6 in the Big 12 Conference and 8-8 overall this season.

In singles play, ISU's Marie-Christine Chartier started off her match with a game win over Texas A&M's Lauren Santacroce, 6-3. Santacroce came back in the second game defeating Chartier, 6-3. In the super tiebreaker Chartier earned the win, 10-7.

Cyclone sophomore Erin Karonis was defeated by A&M's Elze Potgeiter in the first game, 6-3. Karonis came back by winning the second game over Potgeiter, 6-3. Texas A&M's Potgeiter recorded the win in the tiebreaker, 10-8.

Iowa State's doubles duo of Erin Karonis and Kara Hickey led in the beginning of their match 3-1. Texas A&M's Janelle Cuthbertson and Stephanie Davidson then came back to tie the match 7-7. The Cyclones pulled ahead to win the match, 8(7-4)-7. ISU's No. 3 doubles team of Liza Wischer and Tessa Lang played closely with Texas A&M's Sheri Olivier and Elze Potgeiter, but were defeated by the Aggies, 8-4.

“It was good that Marie came back for the only win, but I felt like we competed really well,” Iowa State head coach Armando Espinosa said. “We need to make sure that we can come out and have all the spots ready to play. I'm really looking forward to seeing that.”

ISU will compete again next weekend in Ames against two Big 12 teams. On Friday they will play host to Oklahoma beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday the Cyclones will begin playing at 3:30 p.m., playing host to Oklahoma State.
