AMES, Iowa ? Two Iowa State men's basketball players were selected to the 2009 Academic all-Big 12 Men's Basketball Team, the league office announced today. Senior Sean Haluska, a native of Carroll, Iowa, was a first-team selection and senior Alex Thompson, a native of Ames, Iowa, earned second-team honors.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
Haluska is on target to graduate with a degree in finance. Haluska has played in all 29 games this season, averaging 2.5 ppg. Thompson, who is averaging 2.3 points and 2.5 rebounds, will graduate with a double major in political science and environmental studies.
