Cyclones Post Convincing 6-1 Win Over UMKC

AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State tennis team earned another win this weekend by defeating UMKC 6-1 Sunday at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center. The win improved ISU's record to 7-3 overall. ISU's Liza Wischer kept her perfect winning streak intact after recording a 6-2, 6-0 win over UMKC's Katherine Rist. Wischer is now 10-0 in singles play this season.

Iowa State freshman Marie-Christine Chartier defeated UMKC's Chelsea Horner 6-2, 6-0. In No. 1 singles action Maria Fernanda Macedo earned a solid win over the Emily Lindsay, 6-1, 6-1. Cyclone Reka Kelemen defeated Jillian Yakominich 6-4, 6-2. Kara Hickey shut out UMKC's Jessica Ball 6-0, 6-0.

The Cyclones earned the doubles point as well, after winning at the top two spots. ISU's Erin Karonis and Hickey defeated UMKC's team of Horner and Lindsay 8-2. Iowa State's Alyssa Palen and Bolan Tarkoe recorded an 8-2 win over Rist and Ball.

“It was good to come out and play the singles matches the way we did,” said ISU head coach Armando Espinosa. “We're still working on the doubles, and certainly need to get better at them, but we're making progress and will continue to improve going into the Big 12 season.”

The Cyclones will play their second conference match Friday at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center when they play host to Kansas State at 1 p.m.
