Cyclone Tennis Upends Coe in Final Home Match

AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team earned a 6-1 win over the Coe College Kohawks Saturday at the Forker Courts in their first outdoor match of the season in Ames. In its final home meet of the season, Iowa State improved to 10-10 overall. The Cyclones' 10 wins are their most since recording 10 in the 1996 season.

In singles play, Iowa State's Tessa Lang defeated Coe's Hannah Jensen, 6-1, 6-0. ISU freshman Marie-Christine Chartier recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win over Coe junior Andrea Schupbach. Cyclone Reka Kelemen earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kohawk Susan Gilmer. Iowa State junior, Alyssa Palen, defeated Coe junior, Susan Megan Fiala, 6-4, 6-0. ISU's Liza Wischer earned a win over Coe's Katy Delagardelle, 6-1, 6-3.

“It was a great match and it was good to be outside,” said ISU head coach, Armando Espinosa. “It was good preparation for our upcoming matches and I'm happy we competed well.”

The Cyclones took the doubles point over the Kohawks after sweeping all three matches. Iowa State freshmen Maria Fernanda Macedo and Chartier dominated Coe's Delagardelle and Hannah Jensen, 8-0. \Lang and Wischer also recorded an 8-0 win over Coe's Fiala and Gilmer. In No. 1 doubles action, Cyclones Erin Karonis and senior Kara Hickey earned an 8-2 win over the Kohawks' team of Schupbach and Fiala.

Iowa State will return to Big 12 competition next Friday and Sunday. On Friday ISU will travel to Boulder, to play Colorado at 3 p.m. The Cyclones will then travel to take on Missouri on Sunday at 2 p.m. The two matches next weekend will wrap up the regular season before competing in the Big 12 Championship in Norman, Okla., April 23-26.
