AMES, Iowa - Only one practice remains before Iowa State's football team takes the field for Saturday's 3 p.m. spring football game in Jack Trice Stadium. The Cyclone coaching staff has spent the last three weeks installing Iowa State's new offense and defense. Cyclone defensive coordinator Wally Burnham says the practices have been productive.

“We don't have everything installed yet, but we'll have 29 practices this fall before our first game and I'm confident we'll be ready,” Burnham said Thursday. “We still have guys going through a thought process on the field as they get familiar with the defense. We need them to react automatically and that will come.”
Burnham says the biggest improvement has been in tackling.
“Our team has guys that really know how to tackle now,” Burnham said. “It is no accident. We have spent a large part of practice refining our one-on-one skills in this area.”
Burnham took time to affirm the skills of middle linebacker Jesse Smith.
“Jesse has not been able to make all of the practices this spring because of class commitments,” Burnham said. “But when he is here, he has demonstrated himself to be a real playmaker. He is smart on the field and brings a lot of experience to our defense.”
