AMES, Iowa--Iowa State sophomore forward Craig Brackins won the Ralph A. Olsen Most Valuable Player Award as ISU's top men's basketball player in 2008-09, announced today by the ISU coaching staff. Brackins was voted MVP by his teammates.
A native of Palmdale, Calif., Brackins produced one of the most prolific statistical seasons in recent Cyclone history. The forward ranked second in the Big 12 in scoring (20.2) and third in the conference in rebounding (9.5) while earning First-Team All-Big 12 honors.
Brackins, who was also a first-team all-district pick by both the NABC and USBWA, became just the fifth Cyclone in school history to record 1,000 points in their first two seasons. Brackins averaged a double-double in conference games (21.8 pts./10.3 reb.), scoring a league-high 348 points vs. Big 12 competition. That total ranks 10th all-time in Big 12 history. He was also named ISU's Outstanding Rebounder.
Diante Garrett garnered Most Improved Player honors and won the Most Assists Award. A sophomore from Milwaukee, Wis., Garrett led the team, ranked third in the Big 12 and 36th nationally in assists (5.0 apg) last season. His 161 assists on the year ranks 14th all-time on ISU's single-season chart.
Senior Bryan Petersen won the Louis Menze Outstanding Senior Award. Petersen, a native of Clinton, Iowa, started all 64 games of his two-year career with the Cyclones. He was second on the team in rebounding (3.7 rpg) and 3-pointers made (49), drilling 97 treys in his career to rank 10th all-time in school history.
