AMES, Iowa? The 2009 Iowa Special Olympics will be held in Ames on May 21-23 and many Iowa State student-athletes will volunteer their services at the annual event. Members of the Cyclone men's and women's basketball teams, football, soccer and cheerleading squads will conduct clinics for the Olympians on Friday (May 22).
Craig Brackins has perhaps the most important role of all the Cyclone athletes participating this weekend. The Cyclone star on the hardwood was chosen as the guest of honor at the opening ceremonies, (Thursday evening) where he will declare the beginning of the 2009 games.
“I'm thankful I was asked to be a part of this wonderful event,” Brackins said. “It's a big honor, and to be honest with you, I'm kind of nervous about it. It's a great event and I'm looking forward to helping out the athletes.”
“Special Olympians are great Cyclone fans, and Craig's willingness to join us and declare the games open will create a special memory for all athletes,” said Cheryl Langston, chairperson of the opening ceremonies committee.
