FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.- Iowa State sophomore Hillary Bor ran to a career-best time of 8:35.12 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase en route to a second-place finish Friday at the NCAA Track and Field Championships.
Bor, who ran to a fourth-place finish in the steeplechase at the 2008 NCAA Championships, came from behind on the final lap Friday to pass Jake Morse of Texas and held off Stephen Lisgo of Butler for the second place finish. Bor becomes the second Cyclone all-time to earn multiple All-American honors in the steeplechase, joining four-time All-American Dmitry Drozdov.
"Hillary came into the season wanting to improve on his fourth-place finish last year," Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels said. "He came out tonight and beat some people he had finished behind earlier. He is excited and he should be. He wants to come back and move up a notch next season."
Iowa State freshman Betsy Saina finished her auspicious outdoor season with a seventh-place finish in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:40.87. Saina kept up with the lead pack throughout the race and earned All-America honors.
"Betsy came out and ran 17:30 in her first 5,000 several weeks ago," Ihmels said. "If the race had unfolded in a different way she could have finished higher. There is no doubt she is going to make a major impact for our program in the years to come."
Saina becomes the first Cyclone woman ever to earn All-American honors in the outdoor 5,000.
