LUBBOCK, Texas – The Iowa State men cemented third and the No. 20 women fifth at the Big 12 Championships and added another champion on day two. The women scored 73 points and the men totaled 64.
The women scored the most indoor points since 2020 (74.33 points) and the highest in the Jeremy Sudbury era. The men make for the best finish since winning the title in 2020, while third at indoor championships is the highest finish in the Sudbury era.
ISU concludes the championships with two champions, Mecryline Kirwa in the women's 5,000m and Rachel Joseph in the 400m. The women totaled 17 medalist finishes and the men had 13.
Joseph defended her 400m title and became the seventh in conference history to earn back-to-back indoor titles. Joseph is the first since 2018-19 to do so, and totals her third Big 12 400m title through indoor and outdoor season. Joseph now owns six 400m Big 12 medals. Joseph clocked 51.36 for the win while Jenna James took sixth in 52.98 to score three points.
Joseph's 51.36 and her time of 51.25 set in prelims yesterday are her third- and fourth-fastest indoor times in her career. Through indoor and outdoor season, Joseph now owns the top 23 400m times in ISU history.
Hurdles finals kicked off the day, with Alec Carr becoming the fastest 60m hurdler in Iowa State history with 7.69. Carr took fourth for the highest conference finish of his career and his third-career medal. Jack Latham went 7.86 for sixth to combine for eight team points. Latham earned his first individual Big 12 medal.
For the women, sophomore Riyah Burns went 8.41 for seventh, adding two points for ISU.
Emanuel Galdino was the next medalist with his silver-medal mile finish. Galdino had a strong close to add eight team points clocking 4:05.63. Galdino then returned an hour later for the 1,000m final and crossed the line first, but was disqualified.
Makayla Clark, who qualified for finals in two events, took fourth in the 600y final in a school-record 1:18.37. The 800m specialist then took to her primary event an hour later and stormed to second finalizing a time of 2:06.97, .76 behind first. Clark reset her 800m school record yesterday in prelims with 2:02.18. Kinsey Christianson locked up a team point taking eighth in 2:12.76.
Freshman Jailan Sohna added another silver medal to Iowa State's haul with his all-time best of 1:48.30 in the 800m. Sohna led for the first 600m of the race, and got just beat out at the line to take second.
Two women medaled in the 3,000m, with Betty Kipkore leading ISU to fourth in 8:56.66. Mercyline Kirwa, who won the 5,000m title yesterday, took eighth in 9:07.59.
The men raced next, with a trio of 3,000m runners scoring points. Rodgers Kiplimo took third, Robin Kwemoi Bera fourth and Joash Ruto seventh.
Riley Beach secured her third Big 12 medal finishing eighth to score in the 1,000m. Beach finished in 2:51.19.
The women's 4x400m ended the meet with a bang, going 3:31.57 to down the school record by five seconds. James, Karynne David, Joseph and Clark posted the time in heat three of four, running ahead of the pack throughout. The time went on to claim fourth overall, behind the winning time of 3:31.40. Joseph split 50.34, the only sub-51 split.
NCAA Indoor Championships are next up, March 13-14. Qualifiers will be announced next week.
