AMES, Iowa- Chris Colvin (6-2, 195) is now a Cyclone. The point guard who led his Chicago Whitney Young squad to the Illinois Class 4A state title last season is considered one of the best floor leaders in the class of 2009. He was rated No. 77 nationally in the final ESPNU rankings and Scout.com listed him as the 10th-best point guard in the class.
Colvin, who averaged 12.3 points and 6.2 assists on an extremely balanced team, feels winning the state championship in his final season is the crowning achievement of his career so far.
“I have been waiting for that for three years and I finally got it my fourth year,” Colvin said. “We had a lot of doubters since my freshman year and we showed everybody we were the best.”
Colvin became a legend in the Chicago prep circles as a three-year starter on one of the state's best high school teams. He chose the Cyclones over power programs Kentucky, Marquette, USC, Florida State and Illinois on a live local Chicago television broadcast.
Cyclones.com sat down with Colvin recently and asked him a few questions on various topics.
How excited are you to begin your college career at Iowa State?
It is something I have been looking forward to for a long time, coming down to Iowa State to play ball. I am just ready and excited to get the season started and go from there.
How important is it to start school in the summer?
It is very important because as we start the season we will be traveling and there is not going to be enough time to do work. I think it is important to start early in August to get everything in order now.
What are Cyclone fans going to see out of Chris Colvin this year?
I am a guy who gets everybody involved who is a team leader on the floor. I am ready to play ball and get this place rocking.

What was your reaction when you heard Craig Brackins was coming back for his junior year?
I was very surprised because Craig is a big time basketball player. For him to come back it means a lot to me, the program and the fans. I am ready to play with him.

I grew up watching my dad. My dad played in a league where he played with other pros.
Michael Jordan's son, Marcus, was a teammate of yours in high school. What was it like to have Jordan come to your games and practices?
It was a great feeling, but at same time I knew I had to do my business and not worry about what was going on in the stands. It brought us a lot of attention to our team and I really liked it. I have known Marcus for a long time, played AAU with him, but I only saw his dad a couple of times.
