AMES, Iowa- A pair of Iowa State basketball players may have the unique opportunity to face each other in the next two weeks at the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia. Craig Brackins, a junior forward from Palmdale, Calif., made the USA roster, while Lucca Staiger, a junior guard from Blaustein, Germany, will represent Germany in the competition. The tournament begins tomorrow (July 2) and will end on July 12.
“This is an incredible opportunity for both Craig and Lucca,” ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. “Anytime you have the chance to represent your country and play in an event like this with outstanding competition, it can only help them with their improvement and maturity as basketball players.”
A First-Team All-Big 12 selection in 2009, Brackins made the 12-man USA squad after going through two days of tryouts in June. Brackins' USA team is coached by Bo Ryan and includes James Anderson of Oklahoma State. His team went 2-1 in three preparation exhibition games in Belgrade this past week.
Staiger, who averaged 8.2 points and led the Cyclones with 74 3-pointers last year, was officially chosen to the German World University Games roster yesterday. He participated on the German A2 team the last two weeks in the Basketball Nation's Cup in Munster, Germany.
Each team will play two games in the preliminary round pool play, July 2-4. USA is in Group H with Finland and South Korea, playing Finland on July 3 and South Korea on July 4. Germany plays Latvia (July 2) and South Africa (July 4) as members of Group G.
Following preliminary round pool play, teams will be seeded for second round games based on their pool finish. A total of 24 countries have teams playing in the 2009 World University Games.
