AMES, Iowa -The Iowa State Athletics Department announced today that second-team All-American setter Kaylee Manns was named ISU's 2008-09 Female Athlete of the Year.
Manns, a junior from Topeka, Kan., led the Cyclones on a stunning run to the Elite Eight of the 2008 NCAA Volleyball Championships. The setter was a first-team All-Big 12 selection after finishing fourth in the country in assists per set (11.69). She also took home Under Armour-Volleyball Magazine All-America honors. Along with teammate Ashley Mass, the duo became the first ISU volleyball players to earn American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America honors.
"We are incredibly proud of Kaylee's accomplishments both on and off the court,” ISU head coach Christy Johnson said. “She has developed so much as a person and a player over the past three years. She is very deserving of this award and I can't wait to see what she accomplishes her senior season."
Manns, who also paced the Big 12 in assists per set and broke the ISU single-season assist mark with 1,508, became just the second player in school history to reach 1,000 assists and 1,000 digs for a career. Manns captured Austin Regional all-tournament team honors for her role in the Cyclones' postseason run. This spring, Manns was one of four setters named the USA Volleyball's A2 program where she helped her team to a silver medal at 2009 USA Adult Open Championships. Manns is a two-time academic All-Big 12 honoree majoring in advertising with a minor in Spanish.
She is the fourth volleyball player to be honored as the ISU Female Athlete of the Year, joining Diane Doles (1984), Linda Evans (1988) and Kary Law (1995).
