IOWA CITY, Iowa ? Victoria Henson had 15 kills and Debbie Stadick added a career-high 12 as 11th-ranked Iowa State defeated Drake, 3-1 (25-18, 25-14, 26-28, 25-15), Saturday morning at the Hawkeye Challenge.
Iowa State (7-1) increased its winning streak over the Bulldogs (6-4) to nine matches. The win was the 85th of fifth-year head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch's career, moving her into a tie for second all-time at Iowa State. Johnson-Lynch is now 85-54 at Iowa State.
Kelsey Petersen was also in double-figures for the Cyclones, posting 12 kills and hitting .429 just a night after posting a career-high 14 kills against Iowa.
The Cyclones had three players with double-figure digs, led by Ashley Mass who posted a match-high 18 in the win. Henson also reached double-digits with 11 for her third-straight double-double and Rachel Hockaday had 12 to go along with eight kills.
Kaylee Manns dished out 35 assists in three sets as ISU hit .279 in the match. Drake hit just .050 and had just one player in double-figures as Angela Bys notched a team-best 12 kills.
The opening set was the Henson show with the junior blasting six kills on seven swings as ISU won 25-18. The Cyclones held Drake to a .100 hitting percentage in the set to go up 1-0.
ISU led from the start in the second set, hitting .259 as a team while holding the Bulldogs to a -.103 hitting efficiency to capture the set 25-14.
The Cyclones switched up the lineup a bit in the third set, giving Manns, Hockaday and Kieger a break to allow some underclassmen time to gain experience. Drake took advantage of the switch and won the set 28-26 to force a fourth set. ISU out hit the Bulldogs, 200 to .182, but Drake was able to score the final three points of the set after Stadick and Petersen teamed up for a block to give the Cyclones match point.
The fourth set was all Cyclones after a quick start by Drake. The Bulldogs led 4-1 but ISU scored six of the next seven and never looked back en route to a 25-15 win.
Iowa State wraps up tournament play at 5 p.m. this evening against Northern Colorado.
