AMES, Iowa - Iowa State volleyball player Ashley Mass has been named the Big 12's Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season and ninth time in her career. Mass joins Baylor's Taylor Barnes (offensive) and Nebraska's Hannah Werth (newcomer) as the award recipients this week.
Mass, a native of Muskego, Wis., notched a conference-leading 8.33 digs and 0.83 assists per set as ISU went 1-1 last week.
The junior libero opened the week by posting a Big 12-record 33 digs in a 3-0 loss at No. 24 Baylor. The dig total broke the previous record of 27 set by Missouri's Jodi Maune in 1997. Mass also recorded an assist in the contest. She then had 17 digs in Iowa State's sweep of Kansas State on Saturday, which also included four assists. The 2008 Big 12 Libero of the Year is averaging 5.92 digs in Big 12 matches to pace the league.
Mass and Iowa State will return to action Wednesday night at Texas Tech. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with live stats available at cyclones.com.
