MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. ? 12th-ranked Iowa State hit a season-high .367 to defeat Auburn, 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-13), Saturday afternoon at the Diet Coke Classic. The win puts Iowa State at 5-0 for the first time since 2006 and the third time under fifth-year head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch.
Iowa State will face No. 13 Minnesota tonight at 8 p.m. for the tournament championship. It will be a rematch of the Cyclones 3-1 win over the Gophers last season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Cyclones were led by Rachel Hockaday and Kelsey Petersen, who finished with 11 and nine kills, respectively. Petersen hit .571 in the match, committing just one hitting error on her 14 swings. In the first two matches of the tournament Petersen is hitting .500 with 19 kills and just two errors on 34 swings.
Hockaday, who has been in double-figures in four-straight matches, was also very efficient in the match, hitting .429. Kaylee Manns finished with 29 assists and five digs, which moved her into seventh place on the all-time digs list. The senior from Topeka, Kan., has 1,081 career digs.
Iowa State took the first set 25-14 behind a .440 hitting percentage and solid defense that limited the Tigers to a -.031 efficiency on the attack. Debbie Stadick had three block assists in the set and Hockaday paced the offense with four kills.
In the second set, Auburn led 17-16 but the Cyclones closed the frame on a 9-1 run to win 25-18. Carly Jenson's serving and strong play from Diane Kieger, who finished the set with four kills and two block assists, keyed the run for ISU.
Iowa State opened the third set scoring the first four points and went on to win 25-13. Auburn did close the gap to five at 14-9 but Henson and Petersen responded with back-to-back kills and ISU was able to distance itself from the Tigers.
Ashley Mass had eight digs in the final set to finish with 10 digs and run her consecutive matches streak to 21.
Auburn was led by Kelly Fidero's nine kills. The Cyclones held the Tigers to a .033 hitting percentage in the match.
