AMES, Iowa ? The 21st-ranked Iowa State women's basketball team finally found the balance it has been looking for since the start of Big 12 Conference play. All but one ISU player who saw the court scored for the Cyclones as they knocked off Kansas, 53-42, Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum.
With the win, Iowa State improved to 14-3 overall and 2-2 in the Big 12, while the Jayhawks, which were picked to finish second in the Big 12 preseason poll, dropped to 11-6 overall and 1-3 in the league.
“I would say this is the most balanced team effort, our offense, defense and our fans have had in a long time,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “Our defense was solid and on offense we were really balanced. This is a big win for our team. Kansas is always well prepared. Luckily we made a few more shots. Our team played a little bit better at critical times than Kansas.”
Alison Lacey finished in double figures for the 16th time this season, scoring 13 points and adding six assists and five rebounds. With her points, Lacey moved up to seventh place on the ISU career scoring chart, surpassing Lyndsey Medders and Janel Grimm. Denae Stuckey was also in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds. Anna Prins and Amanda Zimmerman each contributed seven points each.
Iowa State hit 40.8 percent from the field and was 7-of-18 from beyond the arc. The Cyclones held Kansas to 33.9 percent shooting from the floor, and a 3-for-14 effort from long range. The Jayhawks outrebounded ISU, 38-31, but committed 15 turnovers to the Cyclones' 11. Most impressive was the ISU defense's ability to hold Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year Danielle McCray to just six points. McCray entered the contest averaging 20.9 points per game. Sade Morris was KU's leading scorer with 16 points, and Monica Engelman added 10 points for the Jayhawks.
Both teams got out to a slow start, going a combined 2-for-8 from the field over the first three and a half minutes of the game. Prins hit a three-pointer for ISU's early points. Seven different players scored the Cyclones' first eight field goals of the contest as Iowa State got out to a 21-12 advantage with 6:40 to go in the half.
Kansas answered with an 8-1 run, however, to close the Cyclone margin to two points, 22-20. ISU scored the final three points of the half, to take a 25-20 lead into the break.
ISU shot 37 percent from the field and was 3-of-10 from beyond the arc, while KU shot 34.5 percent from the floor and did not hit a three-pointer. The Jayhawks outrebounded ISU, 22-13, at the break, but Kansas committed 10 first-half miscues that resulted in eight points for the Cyclones.
Iowa State started the second half with a pair of three-pointers from Zimmerman and Stuckey to take a 31-22 lead, forcing KU to call a timeout. Morris hit a trey for the Jayhawks, but Lacey came back and knocked one down on the other end as ISU led 37-28. Kansas went on a 7-1 run, ignited by five straight points by Engelman, as the Jayhawks closed to within three, 38-35.
Kansas again sliced the lead to three, 43-40, but Stuckey sparked a 10-0 run by the Cyclones that essentially ended the contest. Stuckey scored four straight points, including making a steal off McCray at the top of the key, and scoring on the breakaway layup. The run was ended by four straight points by Lacey as the Cyclones led 53-40 with a minute and a half left. McCray scored the final two points of the game.
Iowa State will return to the road this weekend, traveling to Texas to take on the 20th-ranked Longhorns at 1 p.m. Saturday.
