AMES, Iowa ? Cole Aldrich and Marcus Morris tallied 19 and 16 points, respectively, to pace No. 3 Kansas to an 84-61 victory over Iowa State Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones held a brief lead midway through the first half, but the Jayhawks went on a 25-11 run to close the half and ISU never seriously threatened again. ISU, which falls to 12-7 overall and 1-3 in Big 12 play, was led by Marquis Gilstrap, who tallied his fourth-straight double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
“Kansas is very talented and I knew they were very talented coming in," ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. "We accomplished some of the things we set out to do. We didn't allow them to get to the free throw line. We were able to attack and get to the free throw line. We were up 14-13 and then turned the ball over on five of the next eight possessions, plus we missed two free throws and then your fighting from behind and that is very hard to do versus a good Kansas team.”
After Kansas raced out to an 8-0 lead, ISU battled back to hold its first lead of the game at 12-11. The 12-3 Cyclone run was aided by five points from Scott Christopherson.
A Craig Brackins jumper made it 14-13 ISU with 14:37 left before the break, but the Cyclones went cold after that. A five-minute scoring drought by ISU helped the Jayhawks to move ahead 22-14 behind a 9-0 run.
The Jayhawk lead reached 13 points (38-25) by halftime, as ISU committed 13 turnovers leading to 15 KU points in the opening period.
Christopherson scored the opening bucket of the second half to cut the lead to 11 points, but an 8-2 run by KU pushed the lead to 46-29 with 17:29 left in the game. Marcus Morris tallied back-to-back to hoops to help KU established a comfortable margin.
A Tyshawn Taylor trey from the corner gave KU a 67-45 lead with 9:30 remaining in the contest.
Diante Garrett finished the game with eight assists and Brackins posted 13 points in the loss. Brackins moves to No. 15 on ISU's career scoring list with 1,315 points.
