CHICAGO, Ill. ? Jon Scheyer scored 31 points to lead No. 5 Duke to an 86-65 win over Iowa State at the United Center in Chicago Wednesday night. The Blue Devils raced out to a 14-2 lead to start and never really looked back. ISU, which falls to 10-4 on the season, was led by Marquis Gilstrap's 16 points and nine boards.
ISU answered Duke's big lead to start the game with an 11-0 run to cut the lead to 14-13 at the 12:01 mark. Justin Hamilton and Diante Garrett each had four points in the run to get ISU back into the game.
The Cyclones hung around throughout most of the first half. The Blue Devils got the lead back up to nine points after a Scheyer lay-in, but Scott Christopherson scored on a basket and was fouled to convert the conventional 3-point play and make it 30-24 Duke with 6:11 left before the half.
A 9-4 run by Duke increased the Blue Devil lead to 41-30 with seconds remaining before intermission, but Gilstrap made a 28-footer at the buzzer to cut the Duke lead to 41-33 at the half.
ISU had eight blocks at the half, including three by Craig Brackins.
The Blue Devils quickly improved their lead to 15 points (50-35) with 16:59 remaining when Scheyer buried a desperation trey as the shot clock was winding down.
Another Scheyer 3-pointer made it 61-42 Duke with 11:42 left in the game. ISU made another run to stay in it, scoring nine-straight points to cut the gap to 63-51. But treys by Smith and Scheyer pushed the lead back up to 71-54 with under seven minutes left.
Brackins, who finished with 12 points, moved into eighth on ISU's career blocked list (83) with three swats and Hamilton scored a season-high 10 points. Garrett also had 10 points in the contest.
ISU is back in action on Saturday to face North Dakota State. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
